Outstanding Achievement Award

Wright-Dunbar Plaza Renovations

Queen City Awning, Cincinnati, Ohio, United States

Queen City Awning fabricated and installed a large stationary canopy at the entrance of the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center to both protect and highlight the renovated entrance to the museum.

The design intent was to simulate the wing design of the original Wright brothers airplane. The fabric and framing material were chosen to mimic the original materials used for the first airplane wing, and the canopy’s curves and the overall shape were designed to look like the wing of the original airplane. The canopy’s compound curves required extensive patterning for the canopy cover to fit the framing. The tubing sizes used for the canopy frame were chosen to simulate the same scale as the wood framing used for the original airplane wing design.

The National Park Service was satisfied with the completed project and it received positive feedback from the museum visitors.
