Outstanding Achievement Award

Verve Opening Ceremony at The Special Event

Pink Inc., New York, N.Y., United States

Penton Media requested an eye-catching, extraordinary first impression for The Special Event 2009 opening session, with the theme of “verve.” Given that, it was decided to immerse the attendees in the design and create a experiential event. Using the newest concepts, the Petal Pushers and the Giant Butterfly, Pink Inc. gave life to an otherwise static trade show environment.

Upon entering the venue, newly developed Petal Pushers, animated flora, were staged around the room with speakers individually wired to each performer. Nature sounds were heard as the figures came closer. On the stage, two groups of nature-inspired forms were positioned. The room darkened and 2' lighted butterflies emerged on the sides of the stage as flying pole-kite butterflies took center stage. Behind them, projected on full screen, was sky scenery with programmed animation and music. The effect filled the stage as the butterfly catcher, a tumbler, emerged with his antics—trying to catch the small flying objects. A giant butterfly came in from behind and startled the catcher, which turned into play. Grass-covered “grasshoppers” came in to save the day. This three-minute collaboration captured the theme of “verve” with dynamic fabric costumes, live performance and technology.

Orchestrating a project like this is complex for several reasons. Most challenging is the collaboration between different people across the country and a dozen performers meeting for the first time the day before the show.

For this structure, flat panel LED sheets were inset into the fabric. Wiring and batteries were housed on a harness close to the performer. Positioning the harness in a comfortable, accessible and aesthetically appropriate manner was another tricky part of this costume. The large wings, with a wingspan of 12' wide by 10' tall, needed to travel small, yet be sturdy and light for use. The correct weight was significant to the design, as they had to balance on the performers’ backs.

The results of the project was a memorable beginning to a several-day show. The client was happy and different elements of the show continue to sell to a variety of event producers around the country.
