Outstanding Achievement Award

Scott Polar Tents

John Herber Ltd / TA The Canvas Technology Centre, Christchurch, Kaiapoi, New Zealand

The project involved manufacturing seven Scott Polar tents to the client’s specifications for use in Antarctica or any cold climate and polar region.

To provide a tent that is well insulated, flame retardant, UV stable and able to stand up to harsh storms in Antarctica, the tents are manufactured with two layers, an inner layer that is flame retardant and also houses the strong alloy poles, and an outer layer of 8 oz proofed poly/cotton canvas that sits over the poles and inner layer to provide protection from the elements. The 6" gap between the layers provides the insulation factor. Because lives can be at risk if the tents fail, the tents must be of the highest quality and workmanship.

Although the pyramid style of polar tent has not changed much since Robert Falcon Scott first used them to explore Antarctica, the way they are manufactured and the fabrics used have. The best quality fabric is sourced, the workmanship is superb and plans can be changed as clients require.
