Mountain View Sectional and Ottoman

The Mountain View Sectional is a custom designed, built and upholstered sofa and ottoman. The pieces were made for a turret-shaped room in a new home located in Marin County, Calif.

The client had found a traditional straight sofa but wanted a piece that would fit tightly into the turret-shaped family room. The inspiration sofa has a similar silhouette but this piece was redesigned to highlight the architecture of the room without sacrificing style, the view, seating space and comfort.

This sectional sofa is unique because the room that it was made for is an eight-sided space. The sectional needed to fit perfectly, taking into account the shape of the room, the height of the windows, the depth of the windowsills and the baseboards. Templates were made on-site for the footprint of the sectional as well as the wings (side view) and the reverse arch cutout for the back. Since the home was still under construction when the project was begun, adjustments had to be made as the finished carpentry was completed in the space. Once the frame was built, the piece was upholstered and special care was taken to pad and upholster the piece to suit the client’s desire for a deep, comfortable piece of furniture.

Because both the home and the furniture were custom built, there was concern that the piece might not fit or might not be comfortable or practical for everyday use. Thankfully, all of the concerns were put to rest when the piece was installed and the client couldn’t be happier.

This unique sectional started as a sketch on a photocopy of a blueprint. To see the progression from sketch to a decorative and functional piece of furniture is quite rewarding.
