This project was to install a full custom interior in a 1967 El Camino.

The client requested a custom console for armrest and storage, to move the tachometer off the steering column onto the console, a cup holder, to make 2004 Envoy SUV bucket seats fit into the El Camino and to build storage compartments behind the seats.

I created the customized console with multiple functions. I used 1/8-inch thick, 1-1/2-inch by 1-1/2-inch aluminum angle. I designed the console to have a storage box under the armrest, 5 inches deep, 4-1/2 inches wide and 12 inches long. An extension was built around the shifter. The tachometer was mounted in place and the hole for the cup holder was cut in. The console sides were covered with Indy Torch Red Velour with Cavalier Black cording and the top was covered with Apex, Steel Silver Carbon Fiber Vinyl to look like polished stainless steel. It was a challenge to make two bucket seats from a 2004 Envoy SUV fit into the El Camino as well as under the steering wheel. The original GM mounting brackets had to be cut off right up to the slide tracks, lowering the seat three inches. After building new mounting brackets for the back of the seats I was able to move the seats back 1-1/2 inches to sit behind the original seat mount brackets. This gave me an addition four inches under the steering wheel. I shaved almost three inches of foam out of the seats, allowing for a total clearance of nearly seven inches under the steering wheel.

The client was blown away by the outcome of his customized classic car. Has won several best interior trophies and has received many complements.
