The new exhibit at The Discovery Place science museum, called “World Alive,” celebrates the incredible biodiversity of earth; part of the design firm’s master plan was to update and invigorate the museum brand which enhances experimentation and learning. The eight twisting, curved forms covered in vibrant printed graphics are various sizes, several over 35 feet long. They provide distinctive signage and wayfinding elements that wrap around the whole exhibit area. Stationed in front of the various exhibit areas, they create a current of movement, automatically drawing the customer through to discover each new area.
The placement and curves of each of the sinuous forms was site specific so coordination with the general contractor was critical, as some of the site dimensions and plans changed over the course of the project. Developing the graphic path for these vibrant prints was complex as the text needed to be in a straight line within the curved form. The textile surface was modeled with a reference line for the text which was then flattened to create the path.
Following the renovation, the annual survey reported that The Discovery Place ranked number one as the most-visited museum and historic attraction in the Charlotte, N.C., region. The Discovery Place has secured its place as one of the top science and technology museums in the United States.
